Google Basics For Kids Series – 8 Things Kids REALLY Need To Understand About Digital Citizenship and Online Safety
Just in Time For Fall! ~ Creating a Safe & Positive Learning Environment Online – 8 Necessary Skills
In this second Summer Google Basics Series, we will break down 8 Digital Citizenship Skills that our students really need to know in hopes that they will weave these strategies into authentic and practical use when online. I will be sharing with you real-life scenarios and storytelling that I use to teach my kids to protect personal information and how to value and guard their online presence.
I have consolidated many hours of my own material down to 8 Necessary Skills. Many of these topics were also a part of my training for my Google Educator Certification, so I feel confident that regardless of all of the Digital Citizenship content out there, these topics include research-based fundamentals that are worthy of our precious class time.
What is “Digital Citizenship”?
Mike Ribble of Digital Citizenship.net, defines Digital Citizenship as -“The norms of appropriate, responsible behavior with regard to technology use.” Sounds simple enough for us, however, our students may need a more simplistic explanation. In most states, it is a part of our Common Core Standards to teach at the very beginning of the year – “Citizenship”. According to a paraphrased definition from dictionary.com, Citizenship means- “Someone having rights and privileges as a member of a community.” So, a translation simply applied to DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP, “Our responsibilities around how we behave online”.
Why Teach Digital Citizenship & Safety?
Kathleen Morris, of the Primary Tech Blog, states – “Students don’t always have the life experience or brain development to navigate technology safely and effectively. So, like many other areas of life, they need guidance from trusted adults, including teachers and family members.”
According to Jamie Condliffe in a recent MIT Tech Review article in January 2018, the average American spends about 2.5 hours a day online. I would venture a guess that most of us and our students spend an average of 3-4 hours or more a day on a computer or mobile device, whether it is completing a digital assignment, messaging friends, watching YouTube Videos or playing a favorite online game. So, knowing that it is not if, but when our students will be exposed to negative online behaviors, we need to be diligent gatekeepers and teach them how to protect themselves and in some cases, they may even teach their parents what they learn! (Many of my students tell me this. LOVE IT!)
