My New Google Basics Topic- “Google Search”
In this series, we will talk about offering our students a basic toolkit for conducting better Google Search Queries. At the end of this series, you will have the opportunity to purchase the “ready-made” lesson Slides accumulated from this series to put in front of your class to help them be a “Google Search Rock Star”!
Teaching kids to be independent learners requires students to have a basic understanding of online search skills. Students should be able to search for information beyond their teacher. I have specifically taught my kids to, “Ask 3 Before Me”. However, before I began my Personalized Learning Journey, the “Ask 3” meant three trusted friends in our classroom but now my “Ask 3” are Friends, Google and YouTube! Here is the poster I have used in my classroom. (This image and others like it will be available in my Google Search Lesson Slides Bundle available at the end of this series)
Start With Relevant Keywords
Achieving relevant search results involves entering relevant keywords, much like asking good questions. However, neither skill is something that our young students innately possess and most of us adults are lacking this skill as well, self-included!
Like Albert Einstein said -“If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?”
It takes patience, time and opportunities to practice with the support of teachers and parents to guide an inquisitive mind through this any research process. So, this means that now that our students have easy access to facts and information online, our role is changing. We need to be ready to humbly guide, support and facilitate this very messy procedure. But how do we do that and where can we start?
